Step-back Bookcase or Cupboard
(inventory # FF-257)

This impressive Mid-Victorian walnut piece actually comes in two parts that peg together.  The seam is hidden behind the quarter molding surrounding the base of the bookcase section.  Two arched doors have their original wavy glass and there is a raised molding framing the glass.  The interior of the bookcase - cupboard has actually four adjustable shelves (we are showing only three here).  The left door is fixed with sliding bolts both top and bottom while the right door has the original brass capped key to lock it.  Note, there has been enough shrinkage in this piece over the years that we had to add a wood spacer for the lock to catch the left door.  Rosettes, burled placards and panels and carved leaf shaped corbels all enrich the surface of this piece.  The base section of this piece features two drawers above the double door cupboard base (with a single shelf inside).  Inside the one drawer you will find a small writing surface (Butler's Desk) that is hinged in the front to swing out of the way and reveal drawer storage beneath.  Compartments on the side offer places for ink wells, etc.  You can also note the use of oak on the drawer sides and the hand dovetails used in the construction.  Once the bookcase top is removed from the base there is an original dust panel revealed that has the name and address of a South Boston owner or cabinet shop- it's unreadable to us.  All the locks work with the original key.  Great storage for either a library or dining room!
